Dave couldn't join me for a dig today, because he
had to go to stupid work. I drove around looking to see if anything had
changed in my fair city, like some new board ups or abandonment's. Finding
nothing and being somewhat early to knock I decided to head for our sister
city to the south.
I drove
past a couple houses that I been unsuccessfully knocking on.No car in the
drive on the first one. The second one has a car! Sweet! I grabbed my book and
marched up to the door with a positive attitude. Knock knock knock. No
answer,I knocked again. No answer. Dang. I then drove to an empty lot where
Dave and I have dug before, and scored big time! I probed up a spot that felt
undug, but I would actually be digging without permission.I decided to wait
until Dave was with so I had someone to blame!LOL
Well,I
had plenty of things to do at home so I decided to forget digging and head
back north. I drove past the house with the car in the drive, but this time
there were two cars! Back up to the door I go! This time a very nice gentleman
answered. I gave him the schpiel and he said, Go ahead!
His
back lot line is located on an alley. I had been digging in this neighborhood
before, across the alley and next door. The last time I was here I did a little
pre-permission probing on his lot so I knew where at least one pit was. I
marked it out and proceeded to remove the sod. A couple feet down I started to
hit some shards and some bones. Nothing real promising as far as age,but I was
still shallow. The first bottle was a small unembossed 70's cylinder.
Then I uncovered a set of twin Dr Boschee's German syrup. A Gillett's Chinese
Bluing,a Dr Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge and a pontiled puff. Nothing spectacular
and no real keepers.
I
filled this one in and probed for another. After about ten minutes of probing
I had something going. It was full of gravel and concrete at the top so I
couldn't find the edges. I just took an educated guess. I came down on one
edge, and started hitting amber shards with no embossing. Then I pulled out a
W.F. Martin hutch. This pit was full of junk. I pulled out some local blob
beers and a few local meds. A cast iron clowns head which I think was a bank.
Also got a sulphide marble with what looks like a lion in it.
All in
all a fun dig with some interesting items.
Until
next time!

Steve cleaned up the head the next day and sent this pic. Sure enough it
is a bank, a Humpty Dumpty coin bank! Way to go Steve.
Also, he sent a cleaned up close up of an import blob beer he found. John and
Pete Steinback brewed in Kenosha, maybe this was some kin to them.
