9/4/03 Craig and Steve got out today. Again, I was working. Steve sent the following email and pics. Figures those guys got into the blobs and hutches. I am not sure if it is my luck, or are those guys hording all the good pits for themselves! Steve writes:
Hey Dave,
I
did hook up with Craig Sat. We headed to Kenosha as I had permission to dig
behind a monument works building. I had probed a pit in the back corner of the
lot last week. We opened it up ,and at about 2' Craig pulled out a Horlicks
jar! ABM Yuck! We dug a little more and at 3' we hit a bottom. We decided to
fill it in. Craig was picking up the tools and I walked down the alley as I
heard a couple if guys talking in a yard. They were a couple Hispanic Hombres
and I having something in common with them stuck my head through the makeshift
gate. All I wanted to do was probe on the outside of the fence as there was
about three feet between the alley and the fence. I went in to the pitch
with my photo album and I didn't let them get a word in edgewise until I was
out of breath. In broken English the owner told me no because he didn't
want me hitting a gas line or a cable. I really don't like to take no for an
answer unless I absolutely have to! I assured him that was an experienced
digger and that I worked for the electrical utility so I knew the wires were
all overhead and the gas came from the street in the front of his house. He
agreed to let Craig and I probe, and after about 4 or 5 pokes I had a pit.The pit
was located right under the fence. Now I had to go back and ask him if we
could dig it. He agreed to let us dig and there were a bunch of small trees in
the way. I asked if we could remove a few of them to dig the pit. He said
no because he wanted to keep them for a barrier. I looked over the fence and
the yard was wide open. I asked if we could dig it from inside his yard.
He said o.k. Finally we opened it up. Turned out to be 1890's stuff. We ended
up with 2 W.F. Martin hutches, 1 Val Blatz blob Milwaukee, 1 Pabst Milwaukee,
1 Kromers hair dye No 1, 1 Allens nerve & bone liniment, 1 cool teal color
wine, a couple Kenosha meds.,and a five gallon bucket of unembossed crap. The
guys name is Juan.He was taking down a tree, and I didn't want him to kill
himself so I went back Sunday and took it down for him. I probed another pit
in the yard and told him I would be back next week to dig it.
