Steve had a several places lined up in Racine for us to probe. The first stop was a pain in the butt. The back yard must have been used for parking. Below the dirt there was a thick layer of gravel that made it very hard to probe. We did find a couple pits. When we opened it we found someone had beat us to it years ago. The next places were owned by Mr. Cook. We did locate a couple pits. We probed them extensively and concluded it was just ash in there. The morning was shot and we decided to head to Kenosha to check a couple spots at Mathew's house from the week before. He wasn't home, bummer. Time was running out. We only had about 4 hours of daylight left. We went back to Racine to knock on some doors. Steve knocked at one, and Al agreed to let us dig. He said he owned the place since the 70s. No one has dug there. It didn't take long to find a pit. It was a monster, 5x5. Craig, Steve, and I took turns digging. About 2' down a white ash layer was found. It ended up being close to 3' thick. The layer below that produced some pieces of crock. One of the crocks had an awesome red seaweed pattern. To bad it was broken. There were a few bottles. Mostly unembossed. We did get a St. Jakobs Oil and a Rubyfoam for the teeth. We closed it up and did some more probing. The older pit has to be there somewhere. We found a couple spots on the other side of the fence. We decide to save them for next week. |
