5-22-05 I scored an 1850 house in an 11th hour permission getting campaign. The next morning Steve met me at the site. I was there a half hour before he arrived and had a pit located in the corner. It was going to be tight. There was only a 3 foot gap between a shed and the neighboring garage. We stretched the tarp out the best we could and got the dig on. About the three foot level we found a couple turn of the century medicines. Steve grabbed the probe and tested the depth. Deeper than normal. Right around 7 foot. Not to much was coming out. Then the hole got to deep to fling, so we started to bucket. Anyway, we got to the layer and it was void of any glass! The best we could do was a Rubyfoam for the teeth, a couple bunk flasks, and a half a dozen slick meds. Steve was eyeballing the chain link fence that hooked up to the neighbor's garage. It took a sharp dive to dodge a tree in the way. Sure enough, the pit we dug was actually the neighbor's. Which meant there should be two or three pits in our 1850 yard. We set out on a mission to locate them. The yard was small and it shouldn't have been a problem. After an hour of looking we gave in. I have no clue where they were hiding. Now came the never enjoyed task of knocking for a permission. We got shot down a bunch of times before we finally found a house that was getting demolished. The yard was huge. We probed for a while and were just about to give in when I found a couple of spots. We decided to open one that was behind the garage in the shade. It was full of big stones and we were only getting ABM shards here and there. I was digging and Steve found another pit under the garage and it felt pretty good. So, we filled in this bunk pit and upgraded to the better one. There were quite a few bottles in this turn of the century pit. Too bad most of them were bunk. We sat there and laughed. Where are the good pits we used to get in to? |
