This week's dig brought me to Racine. Steve had a couple permissions lined up. I pulled up to his place and sure enough, he was waiting on the porch. He pointed over to a new wind chime hanging from porch. He was saving up crier shards for a secret project, and this was it. The main piece is a iron pontil fruit jar base. Shards are suspended from this via some fishing line. Not just any old shards, embossed colored pontil medicines and local yellow beers. The breeze was blowing and the chime sounded great. It was to early to start digging, we decide to do some scouting. We hit a couple empty lots hoping to find something previously missed. Nothing, but this killed enough time to allow people to wake up. The first stop was a property Steve has been eyeing. He knocked on the door and made the pitch. She thought it was a neat idea and was surprised stuff like that could be found in her yard. She didn't mind, she just wanted to check with her husband when he got home at 5 pm. We then proceeded to Kenosha to the ones Steve had waiting. He knocked on the doors and nobody answered. Must still be sleeping. Then we went to a couple more to knock on. Unfortunately all of these were for sale. Dang our luck. Back to scouting for awhile before returning to the first knockers. Luckily, the lady was up and gave us the go ahead. We lined up to systematically probe as not to miss anything in this large yard. Thirty feet down the first lot line, Steve hits a 2x2 crunchy spot. To small for a privy must be a garbage pit. We finished up the yard not finding anything. I was crawling around on my hands and knees in the corner, trying to probe under some overgrown bushes. I didn't find anything back there. Luckily, Steve found another spot on the edges of the over growth. It was only a couple feet deep and thin on glass. There were a couple different Wichert food bottles from Chicago and an applied crown Michel Brewing from La Crosse. The small trash pit wasn't much better. There was an awesome neon green lamp base, broken of course. We decided to go back to Racine. On the way, Steve spots a house that looks abandoned. A notice on the door confirms this one is being razed. Steve secures a permission and we are off probing. I found a spot along the back edge of the property. The first bottle to come out is a local blob beer, Steinbach and Bloxdorf. Then we got a couple local crown top Sparking Springs, one being a quart. This was it for the day. We are due for a real good one soon!
