8/21/04 & 8/22/04 The lack of steady employment has forced me to miss a weekend of digging. I was working and wonder if Steve was having any luck. I got home and checked my email. This is what he reported:
Hey Dave,
I am 2 for 2
on the permission's! The first place was an 1840's house on the northside. I
located about 7 pits in the yard and every one of them felt like it was
cleaned out and filled with ash! I opened the best feeler and I found
nothing,1 unembossed bottle and some broken pieces. I was going to pack it up
and I probed under a fence and snap.pop, crack! I guess I'll open this one too!
Well the first thing out was a crude fruit jar base, and then it was all screw
top s**t! So I packed it up and came home.
The other
place I probed felt like it was dug and as I was leaving I probed a spot close
to the house. It feels like there is some stuff in it. I asked the guy if I
could come back tomorrow and he said he didn't care. Now all I have to do is
find a way to fit it in my schedule! Something will have to go undone!
Cool. Then I get my email Sunday after noon and he has this to report:
Dave,
I did go today. The spot I probed by
the house was as hard as a rock. I had to dig through the top layer and probe
for sides.Well (no pun intended) the sides were brick and round. I stuck in
the long probe and it went to the handle. It was the well,so I closed it up.
I reprobed the spot I found in the
back and sure enough it was dug. BUT,the hurry up diggers missed a pit in
front of it. So down go the tarps and in goes the shovel. When I got to the
layer the first bottle was a crude "L.H.THOMAS" master ink. But the
top was broke off. Next was a blob beer that broke into three pieces when I
moved it. It was unembossed. That's how it went, everything was broke,I was
down to the last corner when out rolled a cone ink. Then I found an"
H.C.OLSEN " blob beer that was also broke. Then an intact "Simon
Gate's Milwaukee Lager" That was about it,I left the cone ink and an
unembossed polish bottle for the guy.Took home the Gate's.
I found another pit under the
garage, and also a pit? by the house. I would have to talk to him but I
think he would let us dig them.
