8/23/03 Saturday's dig started out a little slow. We had nothing lined up and knocking for permission wasn't going well. It was about noon when we decided to switch towns and head for an 1870 house we had been watching. Good thing we went, the garage was being demolished to make way for an asphalt parking lot for their business. The owner didn't mind and we dug two pits on the side before the garage was pulled down with a truck! The first two pits were shallow and from the turn of the century. They contained plenty of bottles, but nothing super exciting. The next pit must be the old one. Steve, my digging partner, is pictured above. He has an uncanny knack for finding pits. I swear he has a sixth sense for locating glass. He located the third pit next to the downed garage. Note the cordless sawzall. This hole was right next to a tree that had been cut down. There were so many roots in there. No doubt this tool saved us a bunch of time. I came back from a soda break and he had pulled out a couple unembossed quart blobs. Then, he surprised me with an awesome colored embossed celery salt bottle he was hiding under a pail. This pit was a little older, but not the one with the blobs and hutches we were waiting for. We ended up with a tailgate full of bottles. The old pit must be under the slab of the garage. I will watch for the excavators to come in and hopefully have a chance to get at it before it gets sealed off forever! |
